We all loved the default windows photo viewer. Windows 10 has introduced a new photo app as the default image viewer. It features tons of new editing features and tweaks. You can change the brightness, contrast, hue and more and also add eye-candy effects using the app. But not all of us want such feature rich photo viewer. Simple and relevant is what we need. But you can’t change it to the old Windows Photo Viewer because there’s no option to do so. Microsoft has hidden it but it’s there.

How to Bring Back the Default Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10

To bring back the default Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10, you need to download a registry hack and apply it. Simply download, unzip and double click it. Click Yes when prompted. It will be added to your System Registry.

Now right a .png, .jpg, .gif, or .bmp file, go to Open with and click Choose another app. Click on More Apps and select Windows Photo Viewer. Note that this only works after you apply the registry key to the system. Tick on Always use this app to open .___ files and click OK.

Perform the above steps for all the image file types (.png, .jpg, .gif, or .bmp). Windows Photo Viewer will be now your default image viewer.

In case, Microsoft decides to remove the Windows Photo Viewer entirely in a future update, you may use third party apps like Google Picasa and the lightweight IrfanView to view images on your system.

The IT giant is preparing the next big update for Windows 10 known as Threshold 2 and will be released within a few weeks from now. We would like to see what changes it has in store for us and whether it gives the Windows Photo Viewer second chance.
